New films by Wes Anderson, Alice Rohrwacher, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Todd Haynes and Wim Wenders will compete for the Cannes Film Festival’s highest award, the Palme d’Or, as well as several films directed by women.
Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch, who took over last year from Pierre Lescure, announced a heavy line-up of famous international auteurs, along with some new faces, at a press conference in Paris on Thursday.
Among the 19 films shortlisted for the prestigious Cannes competition is Anderson’s sci-fi tribute. Asteroid cityWenders’ A Perfect DayKor-eda which monsterRohrwacher Chimera, and Haynes May December, Romance with Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. Ken Loach, a Cannes regular, will return with The Old Oak. Jonathan Glazer will present his first feature since 2013 Under the Skin adapted by Martin Amis, Zone of Interest.
After the reduced 2021 event and the return of the festival in 2022, Cannes this year found the festival again on a flat level and the organizers succeeded because the mission – to celebrate the best cinema in the world as a natural theatrical experience – has remained.
“The movies are coming back to theaters and the public is coming back to theaters,” Knobloch said. “Filmmakers, artists, professionals all agree. Nothing can replace the cultural event represented by the release in cinemas for a film.”

Joining Rohrwacher in the competition are five other female directors: France’s Catherine Breillat with End of summer; Austria’s Jessica Hausner with Club Zero; Justine Triet from France Anatomy of a fall; Senegalese-French director Ramata-Toulaye Sy with Banel & Adams; and Kaouther Ben Hania from Tunisia with the documentary Olfa’s daughter.
Cannes is often criticized for selecting few films by women for its prestigious competition lineup. Only two female filmmakers have ever won the Palme d’Or: Jane Campion in 1993 for Piano and Julia Ducournau in 2021 for titanium. While six out of 19 films is a new high, it’s still below the parity some are looking for.
Some of the best Cannes premieres have been announced. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will debut in Cannes, along with a special tribute to Harrison Ford, as will Martin Scorsese’s Flower Moon Killera big-budget adaptation for Apple of David Grann’s best-selling non-fiction.
Frémaux said he asked Scorsese for the screen Flower Moon Killer in competition at the festival, but is not currently scheduled to compete for the Palme.
On Tuesday, Cannes said that Pedro Almodovar was short A Strange Way to Livewith Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, will also premiere at the festival.
The Weeknd’s series Idol to debut at Cannes
Cannes kicks off on May 16 with an opening night selection, Jeanne du Barry, starring Johnny Depp as King Louis XV. The film, directed and starring French actress and filmmaker Maiwenn, has been touted as Depp’s comeback film after last year’s explosive tryst with ex-wife Amber Heard. The festival runs until May 27.
The highly anticipated HBO series Idolof Euphoria created by Sam Levinson and starring the Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, will also debut at Cannes. Steve McQueen, director 12 Years a Slave and film anthologies A small axwill present him The city under controla documentary about Amsterdam under Nazi occupation during World War II.
The jury that will decide this year’s Palme d’Or is headed by Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, a two-time Palme winner. After winning the highest award at Cannes for 2017 SquareÖstlund won last year for social satire Triangle of Sadness.
Cannes is coming off a film year that has cemented the French festival’s position as the premier international launch pad for films. The three best picture nominees at this year’s Oscars premiered at Cannes: Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis and Triangle of Sadness.
