Seth Meyers was shocked by the seriousness of the allegations revealed against Donald Trump at the former president’s arraignment Tuesday in Manhattan.
“When we first speculated about this case, I think most people imagined it would be one or two charges of falsifying business records or campaign finance violations,” the “Late Night” host said Tuesday night.
“Then it was reported that Trump would face 34 counts, but it’s not clear because it could mean, say, one felony and 33 misdemeanors, which might turn out to be a fairly weak case. But today we know that the charges are more serious than that.
After turning himself in to Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday evening, Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The former president is accused of falsifying business records to hide $130,000 in money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels in the weeks before the 2016 election to prevent him from going public about allegations he made in 2006.
“Not just 34 charges, 34 crimes! Holy shit!” Meyers exclaimed after broadcasting the report from the arraignment. “To raise the $130,000 used to pay Stormy Daniels, did he also rob a bank in a Halloween mask?”
