Reese Witherspoon married to a talent agent Jim Toth just shy of 12 years before announcing their split on Friday, March 24.
“We have some personal news to share… It is with great care and consideration that we have made the difficult decision to divorce,” founder Draper James, 47, and Toth, 52, wrote in a joint Instagram statement at the time. “We have enjoyed many wonderful years and moved forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together.”
In a social media post, the couple explained that their 10-year-old son Tennessee is their “biggest priority” moving forward. “This is not an easy thing and it’s very personal,” he said. “We really appreciate everyone’s privacy for our family at this time.”
At Morning Show star – who also shares daughter Ava, 23, and son Deacon, 19, with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe – met the chairman of Stand Up to Cancer in March 2010 before getting engaged less than a year later. The couple married in March 2011 and welcomed Tennessee a year later.
After the nuptials and the baby boy came, the Legally blonde actress often gushed over their connection.
“It happened out of the blue,” Witherspoon recalled of how they met in a February 2012 cover story for Ella. “This really drunk person hit me, made me look stupid, shouted at me. He’s like, [slurring, scowling, pointing finger in her face] ‘You don’t know me.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I know. I don’t know you!’ Jim came over and said, ‘I’m sorry my friend. She just broke up with someone else.’ Jim is a really good friend, pulling people out of their situations. That’s just an amazing person.”
While the Pennsylvania native was the actress’ No. 1 cheerleader for many years, they eventually grew apart.
“Reese never wanted their marriage to end, but it’s no secret that it’s been a long time coming,” a source said. Us Weekly earlier this month, he was listening to the founder of Hello Sunshine “I really don’t like Jim” and thought he was a great father for his children. “[They had a] healthy relationships and lots of good times, [but] like many couples, they grew.
A second insider before told us in December 2021, the couple, who are now no longer in a personal relationship, have settled their finances before the divorce. Witherspoon and Toth had begun liquidating their joint property and company holdings more than two years before Friday’s announcement.
