British police on Thursday charged a 28-year-old man with trying to kill two elderly people who were set on fire after leaving a mosque, in a separate attack.

West Midlands Police said Mohammed Abbkr, 28, from Edgbaston in Birmingham, central England, will appear at the city’s magistrates’ court.

He was arrested on Tuesday following an investigation involving counter-terrorism police and remains in custody.

Abbkr is alleged to have sprayed the substance on two people outside or near the mosque he attended and then went down, in incidents in west London on February 27 and Birmingham on Monday.

The victim of the attack in the British capital, who was treated for severe burns to his face and arm, was 82 years old.

The perpetrators engaged her in conversation before dousing her in what they believed to be gasoline and setting her on fire, according to police.

In the Birmingham attack, 70-year-old Mohammed Rayaz was set on fire on his way home from a mosque in the city’s Edgbaston area on Monday evening.

He remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Police are asking for security cameras, doorbell footage or other video that could help the investigation.
