NCC to arrest, prosecute defaulters

At Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said it will arrest and prosecute any individual or group involved in the sale and use of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards that have been registered in Nigeria.

Reuben Muoka, director of public affairs, NCC, in a statement on Wednesday said the resolution was in line with the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and the Nigerian Communications Commission (Registration of Telephone Subscribers Regulations) 2011.

“In accordance with the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and the Nigerian Communications Commission (Registration of Telephone Subscribers Regulations) 2011, any individual or group involved in the sale and use of registered Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards shall be arrested and prosecuted , and if it is found wrong, it will be done to face the full weight of the law,” said Mr. Muoka.

He said, in accordance with his powers under the law, the commission regularly monitors and conducts activities to ensure that all stakeholders comply with extant laws, regulations and directives as they apply to the governance of telecommunications in Nigeria.

“In a recent monitoring and enforcement exercise by the commission, several suspects were arrested, handed over to law enforcement agencies, prosecuted and convicted.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission wishes to reiterate that the sale and use of falsely registered SIM cards is illegal,” he said.

He added that the commission has also recorded reports indicating that illegal acts were committed to commit or assist other criminal acts such as armed robbery, kidnapping, financial fraud, terrorism, and various other offenses.
