At People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has cleared Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State to contest the party’s primary election for the state’s November 11 governorship poll.
The Chairman, PDP Bayelsa State Gubernatorial Screening Committee, Philip Shuaibu, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing journalists after a screening exercise at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
Mr. Shuaibu, who is the deputy governor of Edo State, said that Mr. Diri, the only candidate, was cleared by the committee because no burden was found in all the documents he provided.
“We have checked Diri’s documents and have interviewed him. And he is eligible to contest the election.
“Usually as an incumbent and having been a senator, there should be no problem with documents, but we don’t rely on them.
“In accordance with the electoral law, we are still doing our job. And we are happy to inform you that he is qualified to contest.
“He has done well in Bayelsa State. And we believe you will do well and consolidate the good work you have started,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the committee has given a certificate of clearance to Mr. Diri, who is the only candidate vying for the party’s ticket.
Asked by reporters after receiving the certificate, Mr. Diri expressed confidence that he would win the state election.
He said his performance in office and the PDP would speak for him.
“In terms of development, infrastructure and people, records also speak for our government.
“Because we want to continue the peace and security of our country, with the human and infrastructural development that has been recorded in our country, we believe that the only way to stabilize our country is to continue and advance for a second term.
“This is important, so that we will also hand over to others who will continue the current peace and security that we enjoy in the country or the current level of human development and infrastructure.”
Mr. Diri said Bayelsa is not only a PDP state but the government has done a lot in terms of completing many projects started by the previous administration.
“As a matter of fact, they called me the Governor to finish. We completed most of the projects done by the previous administration and added new projects.
“I strongly believe that if you interact with the people who live in Bayelsa, you will understand why this government has shown prosperity for the re-election”, he said.
Mr. Diri said that the PDP remains in Bayelsa State, which was shown in the recently concluded general election, where the party won all the three senatorial seats in the state.
“We also won four Houses of Parliament out of five for PDP. So, we are talking about 100 over 100 for PDP
“Also during the State Council elections last Saturday, the PDP won 20 of the 24 available seats while the others won four.
“PDP is a powerful party in Bayelsa State. Many people who left us until the 2019 general election returned to the party.
