Proud mother! Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest have nothing but love for their daughter Annie and Ruby.
At Halloween actress and Guest – who married in 1984 – became parents for the first time when she and her husband adopted Annie in 1986. A decade later, the couple adopted their second child, Ruby, in 1996.
A year after welcoming Ruby into her family, Curtis opens up about her infertility struggles and why she and This is Spinal Tap star decided to adopt.
“Adoption is the only way for us to have a family. Adopters have a more difficult decision than when you have no other options,” the Freaky Friday star explained in a 1997 interview with Pact’s Point of View Newsletter. “If you want to be a family, that’s what you’re going to be. I don’t think you’re a family until the baby is born.”
Curtis shared the details of the open adoption process with Annie stating that he was concerned that his celebrity status might affect the outcome.
“Maybe it’s different for us than for others. Something happens to other people when you become very famous,” he recalled in the outlet. ” It was visible in their eyes – they were afraid to look directly at you; they treat you like royalty; they are very self-conscious. But when we met Annie’s birth mother and she said, ‘Hi, nice to meet you,’ it was like, boom, it’s okay. I know we are adoptable.
When Annie’s arrival was planned, Ruby joined the brood as a “heavenly” surprise, according to Curtis.
“It was serendipitous and involved a friend of mine who died last year,” the Oscar-winning actress said at the time. “Five or six events came together, all of which caused our family to grow in four days.”
As Annie grew older, she decided to follow in her parents’ footsteps and pursue a career in art. After graduating from Kenyon College, the Los Angeles native became one of the head dance coaches for A Squared Academy of Dance. In 2019, he got married to Jason Wolf. Their wedding was held in the backyard of their mother’s house.
Ruby, for her part, came out as transgender in 2020 and Curtis is proud to be by her side as she advocates for transgender rights.
“Today is my trans daughter’s birthday,” Curtis gushed in March 2022. “I am proud and grateful to be a parent of a trans child and send my support to all trans families across the US who are being targeted at this time by conservative legislatures.
In May 2022, Ruby and her partner, Kynthia, walked down the aisle in a cosplay-themed ceremony. At Scream Queens alum dressed up for a special event and showed her excitement for the newlyweds.
“YES YES AND THIS IS IT! MARRIED!,” Curtis gushed along with a photo of the couple kissing.
When in Everything Everywhere Everything At Once star took home the first Oscar award in March 2023, he dedicated the trophy to Ruby.
“That’s it! To support my daughter Ruby, I have her be her,” Curtis said Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie when you look at it Today. “They’re really good, and they’ve settled in. I never in my life thought in a million years that I’d have some of these today, and I’m very happy with everything.”
