It was a perfect ride from Paul Townend and no doubt redemption for the current three-time Gold Cup winner, who suffered a painful fall when going for the win over his rival at last year’s Cheltenham Festival.
That day, he appeared to jump at the last fence but went up on the landing, sending Townend flying over the horse’s head and leaving Bob Olinger and Blackmore to take the fortuitous victory.
This time, the duo needed a big jump at the end to ward off the threat of Cobden and Bravemansgame, and Townend did not let his partner down.
And to the roar of 70,000 sell-out crowds, the duo set the famous Cheltenham hill on fire with a stunning victory.
