Twenty-two people died when a boat carrying them from Madagascar capsized while trying to sail to the French island of Mayotte, Madagascar’s port authorities said on Sunday.
The boat, which was carrying 47 people, crashed on Saturday in the sea at Ankazomborona in the north of Madagascar, the Agency of Maritime Ports and Rivers in a statement.
The agency said the boat suffered an accident, after which 23 people on board were rescued, while 22 bodies have been recovered. The other two were not recorded.
A police officer who did not want to be named said most of those rescued had fled to avoid arrest for trying to travel to Mayotte.
