PASSI CITY, ILOILO-The champion of three points Paul Lee has proven himself as one of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) main shooter-regardless of how far the distance.
It was proven how to win the PBA All-Star Weekend side event last Friday, when he hit seven shots from more than 27 feet worth four points each to win 140-136 Team Japeth from Team Scottie.
“Everything is possible with hard work,” Lee told the Inquirer while receiving the MVP award after scoring 32 points in the All-Star Game on Sunday at the City of Passi Arena here.
“It’s not like instant coffee, if today it can be done easily again tomorrow. You have to be consistent in what you do,” added the Magnolia guard, who is one of those players who can shoot from downtown.
Sunday’s capper for the city’s festivities saw Lee and the rest of the All-Stars try out a special four-point line that was placed to add some spice to the exhibition extravaganza.
He made several in the first half, including one step back near the center court logo.
The lukewarm
While it’s still new, some can’t help but think that the new line will eventually become a permanent thing in the regular game.
It has been hypothesized that the NBA could finally add another arc with Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard known for hitting long-range bombs.
But is the PBA finally thinking about adding four shots?
Coach Yeng Guiao, who called the shots for Team Scottie, lukewarm, said it was still better to use them in a game similar to the one they played on Sunday.
Lee echoed the former Rain or Shine coach’s sentiments.
“I didn’t see this happening,” Lee said. “Maybe in the All-Star Game, you can implement it as a special treat for the fans. But I still don’t see it implemented in regular games.
Regardless of whether a line is added or not, Lee will continue to make shooting from deep one of his primary weapons.
A viral social media photo has seen Lee working on the figure with the help of personal trainer Nicolo Chua in what looks like a simple midrange jumper. It’s been a habit since the days of Rain or Shine, but it’s only now that Lee has enough confidence to do it without fear. INQ
