MANILA, Philippines – Adamson coach Jerry Yee told his nation to focus on their own progress as they face two rival teams this week in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.
And the Lady Falcons heeded that call and destroyed two rival teams this week, sweeping the University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo.
“I told the girls to focus on themselves because we are competing. We have to overcome our fear, anxiety, and everything. Then, we do what we did in training,” Yee said in Filipino after defeating the Blue Eagles, 25- 18, 25-23, 25-19, Sunday at the Philsports Arena.
“[So we were able to overcome] who is our enemy, regardless of color. We are happy to execute.”
Tubu paced the Lady Falcons with a season-high 23 points to sweep two games this week and earn their third straight victory to improve to a 4-1 record.
“We don’t let them win one set because we will make it more difficult and more tiring for ourselves. So, we do everything we can in each set and try to win the game in straight sets,” said Tubu in Filipino.
“Our goal in every game is to win regardless of who we face. We just have to believe in ourselves,” he added.
Tubu, who teamed up with Kate Santiago to beat UST, who won a big five-set win over National University, paid tribute to Yee and her teammates.
“We always enjoyed the game. The coach and my teammates also reminded me to just play the game and believe that I can do more,” he said.
Yee praised Tubu and Santiago not only for their scoring prowess but also for their consistent floor defense.
“He did a good job of digging and receiving. The first ball is what we need from him to make plays, the scoring is only secondary for us,” said new coach Adamson.
Adamson’s mettle will be tested against undefeated La Salle (5-0) next Sunday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
“We will only focus on execution and process. We are not thinking about winning over other teams,” said Yee.
Tubu agreed with his trainer.
“We know that they are contenders for the Final Four. But our goal is always to do the right thing and be brave every game to bring out the best in ourselves,” he said.
