ILOILO—The fine performance of Adrian Wong who earned the Most Valuable Player award in the Greats-Stalwarts showdown on Friday could be done as Magnolia’s bid for the PBA Governor’s Cup enters a critical juncture.
“I can carry this to the playoffs,” he told reporters after a 29-point performance that helped the Great Team win 158-138 at the City of Passi Arena here.
The Hotshots are currently 7-4 in the season-ending tournament and tied for 5th with the Meralco Bolts.
“We’ll see how each other team comes out after the game, but we’ll just control what we can control and we’ll see from there,” Wong said.
The Magnolia swingman scored 18 of the total output in the payoff frame where Team Greats wrestled control of the contest.
Wong also became the first player to hit a long-range shot worth four points.
“Once I felt it, then I continued to play, see what happened,” he said of the performance, which also earned a place in the league’s history books.
People said he was on fire, as well as another teenager. And that’s what makes the duel even more fun to watch.
“It was competitive,” he said of the matchup that also featured good performances from Phoenix’s Encho Serrano (40 points) Terrafirma’s Javi Gomez de Liaño (30), and NorthPort’s Joshua Munzon (32).
“I feel like people are sad. Except at the end when we know the score is over. But for the most part, it’s really competitive. And I like the competitiveness, it makes the game fun,” he said.
