Liam Smith has revealed that he will not wait any longer for Chris Eubank Jr to agree to final terms for a rematch.
Liverpool’s Smith wants the fight signed, sealed and delivered, or will explore other options.
Smith spectacularly defeated Eubank Jr in a four-round bout in January at the Manchester Arena.
In the last month Eubank triggered a rematch clause in his contract, but Smith has warned that the deadline to settle the place, date and other conditions is coming.
Big fights in boxing can be hard to come by, but promoter Ben Shalom is confident a rematch remains on track.
“I think Liam just wants to go ahead now and announce the fight. Obviously Chris activated the rematch, we’ve sent him the date we’re thinking about. [his promoter] Wasserman has. We waited for him to talk to Chris. We think the date will be okay for all parties,” Shalom said Sky Sports.
Smith has established himself as a world-class middleweight. The WBO, for example, has made him the mandatory challenger for champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.
“Liam just wants to move on [the Eubank rematch]. He has other fights he wants to do at some point and I think he just wants to get this over with,” Shalom said.
“I’ve been waiting for us to announce a date and agree on terms. So he might be wondering why it hasn’t been announced yet. Fingers crossed that he puts the pressure on that we have to agree on a date.”
Although Smith’s victory in the first bout was conclusive, the stakes in the rematch will be high, especially for Eubank Jr.
“It’s a big fight for Eubank Jr. If he loses, it’s going to be tough. But if he wins it’s going to be some big fights for him again and he’s going to make a lot of money and I think that’s why he wants to have a rematch. Because the reward is just huge. very,” said Shalom.
“The same people who said it’s impossible for Liam Smith to beat Eubank Jr. are now saying it’s impossible for Eubank to beat Liam Smith and that’s a formality. There’s no formality in boxing.
“We’ve never seen Eubank Jr. beat before. We’re seeing it for the first time in his career,” he said.
“There are many reasons for that. We don’t know. I think it’s still an exciting fight and this time Eubank Jr. should win and I think that makes it exciting.
“Maybe from the outside it looks like Eubank is sometimes relaxed and maybe he doesn’t look serious like other fighters. Maybe it’s a cry that really needs to be known that he’s invincible, he can get hurt.
“I think he’s as surprised as anyone. I think it makes for a great fight. There’s a lot on the line. Liam will want to show he’s top level again.”
