Ohhema, a subsidiary of La Carte LTD, in partnership with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has donated over 1,500 Ohhema! sanitary pads for Kayayos in commemoration of 2023 International Women’s Day (IWD). The donation and sensitization program was held with the theme, ‘Empowering Kayayos with knowledge on good feminine hygiene and reproductive health care’.
La Carte LTD, sole producer of Ohhema! sanitary pads, a mission to educate young women about the importance of menstrual hygiene and general well-being. In the program, Kayayos girls receive practical training in practicing good hygiene, including the proper use and disposal of sanitary napkins.
Abena Dobmaah Amoanu Arthur, Project Manager for La Carte Company Limited, highlighted the importance of creating awareness about menstrual hygiene and women’s well-being. He asserted that “[Ohhema!] The goal is to ensure that no woman or girl goes without basic sanitary materials and [our duty] is to motivate girls to practice good hygiene.
His greatest interest in surgery is his contribution to creating awareness about menstrual hygiene and women’s well-being. As part of our duty, we want to reach out to the Kayayos girls who are clearly a greater part of the marginalized group that have greater challenges in accessing menstrual materials,” she explained.
However, recent statistics show that the sanitary pad tax in Ghana has risen over 40percent, pushing the cost of sanitary pads to exorbitant levels that are difficult for teenage girls and women with low incomes.
Consequently, she made a clarion call to the government to remove the tax on pads to make them affordable for ordinary Ghanaian women.
“We ask the government to reduce the tax on sanitary napkins or to remove the tax altogether because of this important issue. If taken care of, sanitary napkins will be cheaper, allowing every young woman in the country, regardless of economic status, to have what she needs to have her period and, as a result, perform menstrual hygiene,” he said.
Mariam Mensah, Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), applauded the collaboration with Ohhema!, which is in line with the core function of the AMA to start a program aimed at providing basic infrastructure to the people of the assembly. . He reiterated the importance of supporting any cause that he wants to help achieve.
“It is AMA’s priority to improve the well-being and healthy life among women in metro Accra and the partnership with this initiative is one of them. We only support and respect Ohhema! for this generous act,” he said.
Before this, there had been some discussions with the Kayayo about what they would do to clear the road. The majority of them want to pursue vocational training, and the AMA strives to provide the necessary resources to finance and assist these women in achieving their goals.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity, which calls for recognizing that everyone has different circumstances, and providing them with the right resources and opportunities they need to achieve equal outcomes. Ohhh! donation and sensitization programs are steps towards achieving these goals and promoting well-being and healthy living among women in the Accra metro.
