Army rescues abducted female commissioner in Cross River

Troops of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Calabar, deployed for Operation Akpakwu, have rescued the Commissioner for Women Affairs in Cross River State, Gertrude Njar, from captivity.

The spokesperson of the brigade, Dorcas Aluko, a captain, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Calabar.

The commissioner was abducted on February 1 in Mayne Avenue area, Calabar South. It is not clear when the rescue operation took place.

“Acting on possible intelligence on the location of the victims, the force attacked the kidnappers around Peter Effiong Creek, Messembe, Jebs.

“The brave troops tactically launched an attack to take the kidnappers by surprise, while searching for victims.

“In the ensuing commotion, the criminals abandoned the victim and fled to the river,” Aluko said.

He added that the force was on the trail of the fleeing criminals.

According to Aluko, the victim is undergoing medical treatment, after which he will be discharged.

“The Commander of the 13th Brigade of the Nigerian Army commended the troops for their gallantry and urged them to sustain the tempo against all criminal elements in the Brigade’s area of ​​responsibility.

“Members of the public are also encouraged to continue to provide timely and accurate information about criminal activity in their vicinity,” the spokesperson said.
