African Center for the promotion of legal and sustainable small-scale mining in Ghana launched
The African Center for Minerals, Mining and Development (ACMMSD), a Center with the aim of promoting legal and sustainable mining, especially small-scale mineral mining in Ghana has been launched in Accra.
In a press release to mark the launch, the Centre’s Executive Secretary, Edwin Letsa K. Kpedor stressed the importance of the Center to ensure stakeholders in the extractive sector understand and use sustainable methods in mineral mining to ensure our environment is protected. , preserved, and reclaimed after successful small-scale mining activities.
“In our community today, we are experiencing the negative effects of illegal and unsustainable mining practices on water bodies, forests, livestock, and communities. Therefore, the Center’s focus is to support stakeholders involved in the regulation, supervision, and small-scale mineral mining to implement new sustainable practices to ensure that we reverse the current trends of environmental degradation, water body pollution, and forest destruction.witness in our mining communities.
He further noted that the role of the Center will be to “coordinate the practical implementation of legal and sustainable mining solutions and integrate interventions that seek to promote sustainable livelihoods, especially for women and youth in mining communities in Ghana”.
The release further noted that the Center is committed to using its resources to promote regulation and supervision, advocacy, training, support, and stakeholder engagement in the various mining communities especially in the Ashanti, East, Central, and North-West regions of Ghana.
“A preliminary assessment of the small-scale mining regime across the country has shown the area to be a hotspot for illegal (galamsey) and unsustainable mining practices, and we are working to prioritize activities in these areas,” Mr Kpedor said.
Commenting on the Centre’s planned activities, Richard Nunekpeku, Director of Programs and Projects noted that, “The Center will provide hands-on training and capacity building to key stakeholders such as small-scale miners, traditional rulers, district assembly officials and related service providers. the use of legal and sustainable mining practices.”

In addition, the Center will conduct research and publications, advocate, participate in policy formulation and provide technical and financial support programs for small-scale miners in operational communities.
“Our approach is to provide a comprehensive support service that will help stakeholders to be committed by adapting sustainable practices that produce results. We recognize the need to facilitate the availability of legal, regulatory, training, land management, mining, and sustainable and committed community development support programs doing this as part of our engagement programs and initiatives,” said Mr. Nunekpeku.
