Earlier in the weekend my old friend Ed Davey, the Lib Dem leader, was in town as part of the party’s local election campaign and I was able to speak to him about his party’s aims at the next general election.
The big challenge is one of visibility and it has been undermined by the rise and rise of the SNP in Scotland. Under Commons rules, third-party leaders must ask two questions at PMQs each week, but Ed is limited to one every five weeks.
What can really help is the revival of Labor in Scotland where opinion polls suggest a huge movement in terms of total MPs in a relatively small vote change north of the border.
The LDs also look set to benefit from the rise of national Labor and make gains in seats voting Remain where they are elsewhere. They have won three seats from the Tories in by-elections so far in this Parliament.
The statistics I am referring to is what happened in GE1997 when the LD went from 20 MPs in GE1992 to 46 with the reduction of the national vote.
