Liverpool smashed seven past shambolic Man United
Liverpool produced a complete performance and Mohamed Salah became the Premier League’s record goalscorer as Manchester United were overwhelmed at a thrilling Anfield.
United’s renaissance under manager Erik ten Hag has secured the real prize of the Carabao Cup, but Liverpool launched a brutal reality check on their progress with a thrashing.
Liverpool dominated what was already a tight game, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford missing good chances, while former Old Trafford target Cody Gakpo latched on to Andy Robertson’s perfect pass two minutes before the break.
The second half was a tale of sheer joy for Liverpool and unmitigated misery for United, starting after 47 minutes when Darwin Nunez’s header deflected Harvey Elliott’s cross past goalkeeper David de Gea.
Salah set up Lisandro Martinez to play in Gakpo for a fine finish three minutes later before the Egyptian continued his long-standing role as United’s tormentor by getting on the scoreboard.
Salah ended a swift counter-attack by beating De Gea and the rout continued when Nunez headed home another Jordan Henderson cross.
Salah then scrambled in the sixth to become Liverpool’s top Premier League goalscorer with 129, overtaking Robbie Fowler. He was also Liverpool’s top goalscorer against Manchester United with 11 – and 10 of those have come in the past five meetings.
And in a fitting finale, Roberto Firmino – who has already announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season – completed a remarkable game by making it 7-0 from close range.
Liverpool are currently one of the places in the Champions League, just three points behind Tottenham with a game in hand.
