Apology to Volta Region before independence day celebration – NDC for Akufo-Addo

The Volta Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wants President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to issue an unconditional apology to the indigenes of the region before this year’s Independence Day celebrations take place.

The branch insisted that the apology was “the kind of insult the good people of the region have faced during the 2020 voter registration”.

The government has prepared the capital of the Volta Region, Ho, for this year’s independence anniversary celebration with the theme: “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Purpose”.

The event, which will be held on Monday, March 6, will have the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who is also the President of Guinea Bissau, as the Special Guest.

In a statement issued on Saturday, March 4, the NDC in the Volta Region made five demands from the government as it prepares for the celebration.

Here is the request;

1. I apologize for treating Volta Region residents as second class citizens in the ECOWAS card (Ghana Card) registration

2. Immediately release 126 million in debt to eighteen municipal and district councils in the region.

3. Build one Warehouse per constituency as a promise

4. One district, one factory project.

5 Finish all the projects left:

i. Ave-Dakpa to Akatsi and Akatsi to Avenofeme road

ii. The road Ho to Torkor and Sokode to Kpeve which is held in an emergency road called the road of 2020.

The opposition party said the GH¢ 360,000 the government is demanding from the 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) in the Region could be better channeled into poverty alleviation projects.

“We are confident that this will be of interest to the people of the Volta Region and Ghana,” he said.
