MANILA, Philippines-Paul Zamar is proud that he has benefited from the opportunities he has had since joining NorthPort at the start of the PBA Governors Cup.
Former San Miguel Beer benchwarmer may have had the best game of his league career as he scored a game-high 20 points to beat Rain or Shine, 113-97, keeping NorthPort in contention for the quarterfinals.
He can only thank Batang Pier coach Bonnie Tan for not only getting him significant playing time, but also taking responsibility for being a starter.
“When I was with San Miguel, I would get minutes or I wouldn’t get a chance to play,” Zamar said. “But now I can play every game and feel motivated to keep the trust that the coach and management have given me. I’m glad it showed in today’s game.
Zamar’s minutes were sparse during his time with San Miguel from 2019 to this season’s Commissioner’s Cup. He made 47 appearances averaging 11.5 minutes during that time.
After being traded to NorthPort in exchange for Allyn Bulanadi, Zamar’s exposure increased to 18.5 per contest, producing 6.7 points on 41 percent shooting with 1.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists after facing Rain or Shine.
Having a bigger role is no stranger to Zamar, who played a strong role for Blackwater during their first PBA campaign in 2018.
Although Zamar experienced rough problems in the early stages of his time with Batang Pier.
“I’m still adjusting at the beginning of the conference, maybe because I really want to play,” he said.
“But the coaches told me to stay calm and work on my game. Coach Bonnie told me I could score, but he wanted to make it easier. Then the offense would come.
