World Cup 2026: Lille star Ayyoub Bouaddi chooses Morocco over FranceÂ
Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has decided to represent Morocco at senior international level, turning his back on France after months of intense speculation.
The 18-year-old sensation is now expected to be included in Morocco’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision was confirmed after France head coach Didier Deschamps unveiled his 26-man World Cup squad, with Bouaddi’s name notably absent. The plan had already been in motion, clearing the path for the Royal Moroccan Football Federation to secure his commitment.
Bouaddi’s choice represents a significant victory for Morocco in the increasingly competitive battle for dual-nationality talent.
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi personally visited Bouaddi in Lille as far back as March, a gesture that reportedly made a strong impression on the player and his entourage. In contrast, Deschamps opted not to call him up during the same international window, preferring more established midfielders.
The young midfielder, who has captained France’s U-21 side, was born in Senlis, France, but qualifies for Morocco through his parents. He explained the weight of the decision earlier this year, stating that it is a very important choice in a career, something one should not rush or force but must come spontaneously and naturally.
Bouaddi is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in European football. He has been a mainstay for Lille this season, making 41 appearances across all competitions and demonstrating remarkable maturity and tactical intelligence. His rapid development has attracted interest from several top European clubs.
For Morocco, securing Bouaddi is a major statement of intent as the Atlas Lions prepare for the World Cup. Following their historic semi-final run in 2022, the team continues to strengthen its ranks with elite talent.
His ability to control the tempo, break up play, and distribute with precision will offer a significant boost to Morocco’s midfield options in North America.
