Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final was watched by a record audience of 4.26 million people on Sky Sports.

The peak attendance was 60,000 higher than the previous competition record set in the 2022 final between Liverpool and Chelsea, as Erik ten Hag’s side lifted the trophy for the sixth time.

The average audience for the match was more than half a million viewers higher than in 2022, with 3.79m tuning in at 90 minutes.

This record audience was driven by Sky Sports’ reach and extensive competition promotion across all linear, digital and social platforms by the broadcaster.

Across all competitions, the cumulative television audience increased by more than 18m, rising by one million in 2021/22, with the average audience rising from 1.13m to 1.2m.

“Sky continues to grow audiences for the Carabao Cup, with investment and a strong partnership with the EFL benefiting all clubs in the EFL,” read a statement from the organizers of the Carabao Cup.

The attendance of 87,306 at Wembley for Sunday’s final was the tournament’s highest since the 2014/15 season. The total number of fans attending this season’s Carabao Cup matches is up 1.5m (up eight per cent), with an average match attendance of 16,685 – both the highest figures in the category since 2001/02.

The interest in the competition was also seen by the social media content of the EFL social channels which reached 9.5 million accounts, with more than 4.5 million video views.

The celebrations began at Wembley as Manchester United’s players lifted the Carabao Cup trophy after beating Newcastle.

“These record-breaking figures demonstrate the continued popularity of the Carabao Cup and the competition’s value in the football calendar for supporters up and down the country,” said Ben Wright, the EFL’s chief commercial officer.

“Over four million people watching at home and 87,000 spectators at the ground showed a fitting finale to a fantastic 2022/23 competition and I would like to thank Sky Sports for making this season’s Carabao Cup coverage the best it can be.”
