‘Let’s get them young’ â?? Samuel Osei Kuffour’s urgent call to secure Ghana’s dual-national talents

Former Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has issued a passionate appeal to Ghanaian football authorities: stop waiting until players are established stars, and start recruiting diaspora talents early – before they slip through Ghana’s fingers.

In an exclusive interview with 3Sports, the ex-Bayern Munich defender acknowledged a painful reality: Ghana is often the second choice for players of Ghanaian heritage who are also eligible for European nations.

“If your son is Jude Bellingham, both parents from Ghana, will you allow Jude Bellingham to play for Ghana or England? Whether we like it or not, we are second choice. ” Kuffuor said.

But instead of accepting defeat, Kuffuor offered a solution: go after them young.

“If Doku, Jeremie Frimpong, and all those players… If we had got them young, all of them would play for Ghana. Let’s get them young. That’s why I’m using the office in Europe,” he explained.

His reference to Jérémy Doku (Belgium) and Jeremie Frimpong (Netherlands) – both of Ghanaian descent but opted to represent European nations – underscores the urgency of the issue. These are talents that could have strengthened the Black Stars but were lost because Ghana did not act early enough.

Kuffuor’s remarks come as Ghana continues to scout dual-national prospects ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The debate over whether to include diaspora players who initially chose other nations remains heated.

But for Kuffuor, the focus should not be on convincing already-lost talents to switch allegiance. Instead, he advocates for a proactive, youth-focused recruitment strategy.
