Merrick Garland, Sen. Ted Cruz Spar In Testy Exchange On Protests At Justices’ Homes

In a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Cruz accused Garland, a former federal judge whose own nomination to the Supreme Court was blocked by Senate Republicans, of allowing threats of violence against judges, and he claimed that Garland and the DOJ “did nothing.”

Garland quickly addressed Cruz’s claims and said he did something no other attorney general in Justice Department history had done before: He ordered U.S. marshals to protect judges’ homes.

“Senator, you asked me to sit on my hands, and, on the contrary, I sent 70 US marshals to defend …,” Garland responded before Cruz interrupted with another question.
