Francis Amuzu scores late winner to give Gremio vital victory over Deportivo Riestra
Belgian-Ghanaian forward Francis Amuzu came off the bench to fire Gremio to a dramatic 1â0 home win over Deportivo Riestra in the Copa Sudamericana, ending the Brazilian side’s five-game winless run in all competitions.
Introduced at half-time, Amuzu was a constant trouble down the flanks before finally breaking the deadlock in the 87th minute.
After wave upon wave of pressure, Gremio’s dominance in possession and chances was finally rewarded when José Enamorado slipped a clever pass into the box and Amuzu calmly finished to beat Ignacio Arce from close range. It was no less than Gremio deserved after registering 17 shots to Riestra’s 3 and completely controlling the game territorially.
Deportivo Riestra rarely threatened, struggling to escape their own half for long spells and failing to register a single effort on target. Gremio’s back line, marshalled by Fabián Balbuena and Viery, ensured Gabriel Grando enjoyed a quiet night behind them.
The victory gives Gremio a crucial three points in Group F and some much-needed confidence ahead of their next test, a Serie A clash at home to Cruzeiro on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
