36 people die in Greece, many injured as two speeding trains collide

It was a disaster that many cars on the road near the railway caught fire along with the passenger cabin of the train and the impact pushed some people out of the window, the report said.

A survivor of a fatal accident recounts: “I heard a big noise, (it was) 10 seconds of a nightmare, we rolled in the carriage until it fell to the side, and until the commotion stopped, then there was panic, cables (everywhere) fire, fire immediately. , when we turned around, we were it’s burning, the fire is going to the right and to the left.”

The head of the local station in the nearby town of Larissa was arrested and charged with murder.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis has resigned, saying the incident is so tragic that he cannot continue in his position as sector minister.

Reports say Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis earlier visited the site of the disaster and promised to solve the cause.

Rescue efforts continue as the injured victims receive treatment at various health facilities.

So far, it is not clear what caused the deadly crash which has been described as one of the most devastating transport disasters in the history of the southern European country.
