New CI: We are ready to support EC to implement mandate – NIA leadership
The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Professor Kenneth Attafuah, said his outfit is ready to mandate the issuance of Ghana cards to support the Electoral Commission in implementing the proposed Constitutional Instrument for the 2024 general elections.
The EC is trying to use the Ghana card as the only identification document for voter registration.
Addressing Parliament on the readiness of the outfit to issue Ghana cards to applicants, Professor Attafuah said they have the operational competence to issue Ghana cards to assist the EC in the registration process.
“The NIA has the technical and operational competence to print and issue cards. We are ready to implement the mandate. The NIA is ready, prepared and able to provide and implement the mandate, according to the provision of the necessary financial support,” said the NIA leader.
Professor Attafuah explained that NIA has not been able to print 541,529 applicant cards due to financial problems.
He said that if there is any financial problem, he will ensure that all applicants have access to the Ghana card.
“The 541,529 unprinted cards reflect financial difficulties that finally started around July and August last year. [2022], which resulted in us not being able to get access to some 3.5 million blank cards, which had been ordered to the country. What is currently in the bonded warehouse, has been brought to the country by our technical partners, but we cannot access it due to financial constraints,” he said.
