Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and one fellow Republican were the only parliamentarians to vote against the resolution that mourned the death of nearly 50,000 people in the earthquake this month in Turkey and Syria.
The resolution, which praised “the work of humanitarian aid and rescue workers on the ground” and condemned “the efforts of the Assad regime in Syria to exploit the disaster to avoid international pressure and responsibility,” passed 412-2.
Rep. Joe Wilson (RS.C.), who sponsored the earthquake resolution, said on the floor of the House that “for the brutal Assad regime and its backers – Putin’s criminal war, the authoritarian ayatollah in Iran – there will be a message: Your diversion of humanitarian aid when there is an earthquake is an abomination .
“The US Congress remains united. We will not be normal with you,” said Wilson. “We will hold accountable all those who try to normalize with you, and we will not stop supporting the people of Syria to have a government they deserve based on democracy with the rule of law, not authoritarianism with the rule of the gun.”
Greene, a spotlight-seeking extremist, called on America to stop funding Ukraine’s defense against a Russian invasion. In February, he tweeted he was “praying for Turkey and other countries suffering from deadly earthquakes.”
