Tommy Fury has revealed that the “weight of the world” is off his shoulders following his split decision win over Jake Paul.
Fury came out on top in eight close rounds, despite suffering a knockdown in the final round, with two judges scoring the score 76-73 for him, while another official scored 75-74 for Paul, who suffered the first defeat of his boxing career.
Paul has disrupted the world of boxing, leveraging his social media profile to build a career in sports, but Fury is the first professional opponent he has faced and with the win, the English cruiserweight believes he has removed the “weight from his shoulders” that has “used” him in the build-up to war.
“It was an amazing fight. An amazing fight, very exciting, eight rounds in the bank,” Fury said.
“Jake is a tough kid. He took a lot of shots and still being there is a credit to him.
“He doesn’t have to be in this fight, he can fight anyone and it’s an easier challenge, but he wants to test himself so I can respect him.
“Don’t forget, I’m only 23 years old and I have the weight of the world on my shoulders tonight.
“My lady just gave birth three weeks ago, there’s a lot going on and I’m happy that I went out with my team, my dad, and we left with a win, we left with a belt.
“It’s just the best feeling in the world because for the last two and a half years, it’s been everything that’s ruined my life.
“Going around in public ‘you backed out of two fights, you’re scared of Jake Paul, you’re not a real fighter’.
“Tonight I showed everyone that I’m not afraid of anyone and that I can cut it in the big dance.
“What can they say now? Me and Jake Paul fought in the ring and I came out the winner.”
Fury cut an emotional figure after the fight as he tearfully celebrated his victory. However, he insists that the reaction did more than just defeat Paul, it also “silenced” his social media critics after three years of complications that have delayed the fight on several occasions.
“It’s not about beating Jake Paul, it’s about overcoming everything I’ve been through the last three years,” he said.
“The broken ribs, the denied access to the US, all the comments, all the social media is against me.
“That’s all for and I showed everyone tonight that I can handle the big dance.
“There are a lot of questions about it, will he be under pressure?
“But did I crack under the pressure? Of course not.
“Me and Jake Paul had a great fight and I believe we can have a better fight in the second half.”
Paul: Fury is ‘impressed with skill | The rematch will be even bigger
Despite the loss, Paulus believes he has shown the “skills” he has on the world stage, and even earned praise from Fury.
“We just talked about, that is a good fight, a good fight. He was impressed with my skill,” said Paul.
“He said, ‘Look, I’ve been doing this since I was six years old and you’ve been doing it for three years and you’re making war.
“That’s what I love about this sport. You can be enemies before and say all these crazy things, and then when you’ve beaten each other’s blood, at the end of the day, there’s respect and that’s why this sport is cool.
“I have a lot of room to grow and improve and that’s what I’m going to do.
“I think after tonight you’ll see everyone on the internet saying ‘first time he fought a professional boxer and he lost, blah, blah, blah’ and I get it.
“But I can definitely beat a very tough opponent in a short amount of time and I’m going to go back to the gym and continue to work on my job and the sport of boxing.
“The rematch will be even bigger.”
