Man United won the EFL Cup to end a six-year trophy wait
Manchester United claimed their first trophy since 2017 with victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
Newcastle’s wait for the trophy, since 1969, continued after two goals in six minutes in the first half put Manchester United ahead and gave them their first success under manager Erik ten Hag.
Casemiro broke the deadlock after 33 minutes when he returned to Lukas Shaw’s free kick and the team doubled their advantage after Sven Botman deflected Marcus Rashford’s shot out of the reach of Newcastle’s stand-in goalkeeper Loris Karius, deputizing for the suspended Nick Pope.
Newcastle tried to rally in the second half, but the goals dried up at the wrong time for Eddie Howe’s men.
It means Manchester United return to the award after enjoying the last success six years ago when they lifted the Europa League under Jose Mourinho, and also won this competition in the same campaign.
