Tennessee Moves To Ban Drag Shows In Public Areas

Tennessee House Republicans passed a bill Thursday that aims to limit drag shows in the state.

The bill, expected to be passed by Gov. Bill Lee (R), would ban “adult-oriented” shows on public property and in front of children, The Tennessean reported.

“It gives confidence to parents that they can bring their children to public or private events and not be put off by their sexual performance,” Johnson said.

Peppermint, a drag performer who was once featured on the show “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” told Reuters that the anti-drag bill was a way for anti-LGBTQ supporters to create a “boogie monster.”

“It’s a straw man, it’s a boogie monster, it’s not the real thing, so they’re making up a story,” he told the publication. “The first thing they do is target us, dehumanize us, villainize us, and then legislate us.”
