The under-the-radar team dropped significantly on Friday, and pre-tournament favorite Luisita revved the engine the way she liked to enter the final round of the Philippine Airlines Seniors Interclub championship in Alta Vista.
Cebu Country Club (CC), playing in the lower Founders division, got the prize in the bag after a third round of 133 built around eight-over-par 80s worth 46s from Carl Almario and Jufil Sato at Club Filipino in Danao, but the Cebuanos had to fight the Luisitans , who earned a spot despite building a roster that could have been stronger.
Luisita scored 138 after 48 points from Benjie Sumulong, 46 from Ronnie Littaua and 44 from Demi Saclot, as non-playing captain Jeric Hechanova sounded happy by only two points from the overall title race.
“We are happy and confident because we have a very solid team tomorrow,” said Hechanova about the fourth-round team that will consist of Chino Raymundo, ex-pro Dan Cruz, Steve McDonald and veteran Rodel Mangulabnan, who will play up-and-down , well-manicured of course.
“Our line lasted for four days, it seems to work'” added Hechanova. “The game plan for today will not be abandoned. But we are lucky and lucky to be able to slice the lead in Cebu.
Now 10 down
Defending champion Canlubang continued to slide, amassing a week-worst 125 after Abe Rosal contributed 48, Zaldy Villa 41 and Rene Unson 36 for 10 points in the middle race although Manila Southwoods made it into the mix.
Carmona-based betting will open the final 18 only seven points down after amassing 134 built around 48 Jun Jun Plana and 46 Joseph Tambunting. Southwoods’ third score was 40s from Thirdy Escaño and Theody Pascual.
Eric Deen, Nelson Yuvallos, Kyu Ok On and Jay Yuvallos, the quartet that collected the second round of 140 on Friday, will be the team that will try to finish the job for Cebu CC.
Cebu CC, which also won the Men’s Regular division title playing at Founders a few years ago, is now 33 points ahead of The Orchard in the lower bracket.
