How Christian Atsu donated his first FC Porto salary to a Ghanaian church

Yartey said that when Atsu signed his first contract with FC Porto, he immediately sent his first salary of €800 to be given to the church.

“He is a Christian. Very devoted to religion, and the Bible. There is a church behind us, where he wants to attract his fellow players, “ Cheetah FC CEO told TV3.

“I remember when Christian went to Porto and was successful in the trial, Porto continued to pay 800 euros a month. So I received 800 euros [the same amount as his salary] through Western Union from Christian.

“I was very happy thinking that he had sent the money but he called and he said that the 800 euros he sent is equal to x amount of Ghanaian cedis that he ordered me to give to the church.”

Atsu was confirmed dead last Saturday after his lifeless body was pulled from the rubble following an earthquake in Turkey.

It follows days of intense searches after earthquakes devastated Turkey and Syria two weeks ago.

Tributes have poured in from far and near, with many offering condolences to the footballer’s family and loved ones.

Atsu’s remains arrived in Ghana on Sunday afternoon, with a brief ceremony held at the Kotoka International Airport VIP lounge to receive the remains.
