President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised the selflessness, self-sacrifice and patriotism of the country’s armed forces, who always put the country’s interests first even in the face of great danger.
“As commander-in-chief, I commend the good work you do as men and women in uniform,” Ramaphosa said yesterday at this year’s Armed Forces Day event held in Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.
Discipline
He praised the high level of discipline he was able to maintain even under difficult circumstances.
“Devoted and loyal to the constitution, he acted without hesitation when called upon to do so, when his country needed him,” he said.
Ramaphosa said soldiers have picked up the spears of fallen heroes and heroines and continue their efforts to bring peace, security and stability to South Africa.
“I congratulate all of you who are doing your duty during the time of the accident which means between life and death. “We are inspired by the courage to stand here in the face of serious challenges facing society. “We are determined to win the struggle against poverty, inequality, unemployment, gender-based violence, crime, disease and deprivation.”

Endurance
Ramaphosa said the soldiers carry out rescue missions during disasters, build bridges where there is desperate need and repair rivers from the effects of pollution.
“He has shown time and time again that he is a force for good and an integral part of progressive humanity. “In defense and loyalty to the constitution, he acts without hesitation when called upon, when his country needs him.”
Celebration
Since last week, the small town of Richards Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal has been a hive of activity as members of the SA National Defense Force (SANDF) invaded the town to host this year’s Armed Forces Day.
Zakhele Madondo, a resident of Richards Bay, said he was happy to see the SANDF in the area. “It shows that they are truly our army.
“I have never seen so many soldiers in our city. I am happy to see them,” he said. Muziwendoda Sikhakhane came from Manguzi to attend the event.
“I am impressed that the SANDF is also giving young people the opportunity to be part of the SANDF,” he said. Before the official event, the president started the day by laying a wreath at Empangeni World War II Monument.

Commemorated every year
Afterwards, he proceeded to a military parade where he was welcomed by the SANDF. Armed Forces Day is observed every year on 21 February to commemorate the World War I naval tragedy in which 616 black South African soldiers died when the steamer SS Mendi sank on its way to France.
Today honors the women and men who have died in the line of patriotic duty in their country or on international missions.
The day also seeks to broaden public understanding of the role of the SA National Defense Force and demonstrate through live military action simulations the capabilities of the army, navy, air force and the South African Military Health Service. It also encourages the imagination of the youth in choosing a career path.
