Christian Atsu was found dead under the rubble after the devastating earthquake that occurred two weeks ago, according to a tweet by Turkey-based football agent Murat Uzunmehmet on Monday morning.

The attacker had been trapped for 11 days before he was found dead.

It is believed that Murat Uzunmehmet has a close relationship with Christian Atsu, and some believe he is involved in the forward transfer to Hatayaspor.

Several sources in Turkey seem to support the announcement made by Uzunmehmet about Atsu’s death.

After the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria, reports emerged on Monday, February 6 that Christian Atsu was among those trapped in the rubble. This led to prayers for his safe recovery, with current president Nana Akufo-Addo and former president John Mahama joining in.

The next day, Atsu’s club confirmed that he was only rescued with an injured leg. However, Hatayaspor later clarified that it was a case of mistaken identity and that Atsu had not been found.

The circulation of videos showing the rescued people strengthened people’s hope and faith that Atsu would also be found alive.

Atsu’s wife Marie-Claire Rupio, who lives in Newcastle with their two children, made a public appeal for the authorities’ support in finding her husband. Rupio confirmed that Nana Sechere, Atsu’s agent, had arrived in Turkey to help with the search.

In a series of tweets earlier this week, Sechere gave an exciting update, saying that Atsu’s shoes had been found but the player was still missing.

This is the last update before Saturday’s announcement of Atsu’s death.

Ghanaians took to social media to pay tribute to Atsu, who played 65 matches between 2012 and 2019, including an outstanding performance at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named player of the tournament.

Atsu played in various European clubs, such as Chelsea, FC Porto, Newcastle United, Everton, and Bournemouth.
