The Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Professor Kofi Agyekum has expressed concern over the Bawku Chieftaincy conflict, asking why people cannot allow peace to reign in society.
Prof. Kofi Agyekum, who is a member of the National Peace Council, recalled the time he and members of the Council convened a meeting with the residents of Mamprusi and Kusasi, which had caused conflict, to resolve the issue.
According to him, the meeting ended peacefully and both parties have decided to unite and restore peace in the community but it did not last long as the conflict resurfaced.
“They even played football and ate together amid laughter. But I don’t know what passion entered when they returned to the community because when they returned, they started fighting again.”
Prof. Kofi Agyekum, popularly known as ‘Opanyin Agyekum’, almost cried when talking about the Bawku conflict when Peace FM “Kokrokoo” show Thursday morning.
He wondered how long the conflict would continue and how people would suffer in the name of installing a Chief.
Opanyin Agyekum called on the people, especially the educated among them, to fight the conflict by implementing measures to bring peace to the community.
“The youth, especially the educated, must intervene to create peace and unity,” he urged.
