Pressure group warns gov’t over the sale of Saglemi housing project

Convenor of the group, Nana Otu Darko warned private developers interested in buying the project not to stop.

He said, “We are sending a strong warning signal to private developers who want to take over the project. Any private developer who tries, at their own peril. We will force the successful government to cancel the contract.”

The government has decided to wash its hands of the Saglemi housing project to allow private developers to renovate the housing units and sell them to potential owners, according to the Ministry of Works and Housing.

The minister of the sector, Francis Asenso Boakye announced this at a press conference in Accra on Sunday, November 13, 2022.

According to Francis Asenso-Boakye, the government has spent about US$196 million on the project and does not intend to spend additional money on taxpayers to complete it.

He said the state will use equity in the form of land and assets at the project site to ensure that the units are completed by private developers.

He said proceeds from the sale will be reinvested by the state into other affordable housing projects.

He said the government was exhausted and crippled and could no longer commit to the Saglemi project.

On this basis, “we allow private sector developers to take the initiative to build and sell residential units,” he said.

The minister confirmed that “a committee will be appointed to guide the process and ensure transparency in the bidding process.”
