‘Oleku’, ‘Mortal Inheritance’ other must-see Nollywood classics on Valentine’s night

Valentine’s Day is finally here. If you are one of those who don’t like to go out on a special day like this and prefer to stay at home comfortably, this article is for you.

To make sure you are included in the celebration of love, here are 10 Nollywood movies to watch this Valentine’s Day.

While the film ranges from 90s classics to modern romantic themes, it’s sure to generate waves of nostalgia and ask the common question, “God, when?”

Mortal Legacy

Released in 1996, Moral Inheritance featured the stellar acting talents of Fred Amata, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, and Kunle Bamtefa.

With a theme of inter-ethnic compatibility and marriage, the film tells the story of Kemi, who suffers from sickle cell anemia. Fortunately, he has overcome the odds of dying young and finally finds love with Chike, an Igbo man.

However, things take a turn for the worse when Chike is discovered to be the US, which puts him at a crossroads.

Royal Hibiscus Hotel

Honestly, at this point, the image of Zainab Balogun coming down the stairs in a red dress will remain in our minds.

When Ope returns from London to Nigeria, hoping to add to the menu of his parents’ hotel, he is informed of his intention to sell the hotel to a man. Although initially hostile to the buyer, he begins to consider the possibility of a relationship.

Where do we even begin? Acting sequence, story line, or dance? Before Ini Dima Okojie played Sarah in the hit series, “Blood Sisters,” she played the role of Didi in this Bollywood and Nollywood crossover.

Didi, a Nigerian woman, falls in love with Raj, an Indian, and their love affair meets with the disapproval of her parents.

Namaste Whala does a great job of highlighting the challenges faced in interracial relationships.

Okafor’s Law

This Nollywood movie left us in awe of Blossom Chukwujekwu. He performed brilliantly as Chuks Okafor (aka Terminator) and was joined by Omoni Oboli, Gabriel Afolayan, and Richard Mofe Damijo, among others.

The plot revolves around Chucks, who makes a bet with his friends to re-seduce his ex-boyfriends, Ify, Tomi, and Ejiro, in 21 days. This proves the validity of the theory that men cannot remain platonic friends with women.

Not Standing

From the directive vision of Tade Ogidan in 1997 came “Ole Ku”, an adaptation of Prof.’s novel. Akinwunmi Ishola.

The movie starring Yemi Shodimu, Feyikemi Abodunrin, Omolola Amusan, and Hafiz Oyetoro, among others, tells the story of the love quadrangle between Ajani, Asake, Lola, and Sade. Due to pressure from his mother, Ajani is forced to choose one of the women to be his wife. However, this becomes a problem as things get complicated.

Abeni

There is a reason Tunde Kelani used to be considered a classic; This is a 2006 romantic drama.

A recipient of several film awards, Abeni revolves around the eponymous Abeni, who meets Akanni. While Abeni was born with a silver spoon, Akanni comes from a humble background. This causes a stumbling block in the relationship, but fate brings them back together.

Dinner at my place

Recently released in 2022, “Dinner at My Place” is based on the life of Nonso, a Nigerian-American man whose proposal plans for his girlfriend take a sudden twist when his ex-girlfriend shows up at dinner.

Dinner at My Place is a romantic drama directed and written by Kevin Apaa and starring Timini Egbuson, Bisola Aiyeola, and Sophie Alakija.

Violated

If you’ve ever tried to picture what RMD was like in your youth, this 1996 romantic drama directed by Amaka Igwe is for you.

Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD) is Tega, a rich young man who falls in love with and marries Peggy from a different social background. The foundation of their marriage is threatened when a hidden secret is revealed.

A Personal Storm

Director Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen and Ikechukwu Onyeka, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde and Ramsey Nouah play the roles of the couple, Gina and Alex. While they seem like a perfect couple, Alex is an overly possessive man who emotionally and physically abuses his wife, Gina.

The 2010 romantic drama stars Ngozi Ezeonu, Ufuoma Ejenobor, John Dumelo, and Blossom Chukwujekwu.

Beyonce and Rihanna

In this movie, colleges compete in a Statewide competition to crown the next big recording artist.

With Nadia Buari (Bernice) as Beyonce and Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (Rhyme) as Rihanna, the stakes are higher as they emulate the rivalry between America’s Beyonce Knowles & Rihanna. Jim Iyke stars as Jay Z.

Aside from the musical performances, this 2008 film remains a classic Nollywood romance film.
