The Police Service Commission (PSC) has finalized plans to deploy personnel to the 774 Local Government Areas in the country to monitor police operations during the general elections.
The Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
While the presidential and National Assembly elections were held on February 25, the gubernatorial and state assembly elections began on March 11.
He said the idea was to ensure that police assigned to election duty operated within the prescribed rules of engagement.
According to him, the commission believes that the success or failure of the general election depends on the effectiveness and efficiency of the police as the main institution of internal security.
“Guidelines for the conduct of the police during the election will soon be released by the commission to guide the police who will be involved in the security of the election.
“The commission will also release a dedicated phone number where Nigerians should call to complain or commend police officers during the election.
“Policemen found to be negligent or directly involved in official misconduct will be disciplined in accordance with the provisions of the law,” he said.

He ordered the police to restrict themselves to providing security during the election and not to engage in acting as conductors to buy votes or other misdeeds.
Mr. Ani said that the commission will keep the police accountable for their actions during the election.
