Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis has joined MLS club Atalanta on a four-year deal worth more than £4m.

The Greece international agreed personal terms with the club at the start of last week, with a deal to take him away from Parkhead now complete.

Atlanta will pay Celtic a guaranteed £3.5m, with an additional £800,000.

The move ends a long saga for the signature of Giakoumakis. He has passed his medical with Japanese team Urawa Red Diamonds during the January Transfer Window.

“Giorgos is a player who has been on the club’s radar for a long time and we are happy to bring him to Atlanta,” said Atlanta vice president and technical director Carlos Bocanegra.

“He is a strong striker who likes to get into the box and score goals. He plays with high intensity, works hard and is someone we think will help the team in attack and lead the defensive line.

“We are delighted to welcome him to the club and integrate him into the squad.”

Giakoumakis has played 57 times for Celtic since his move from VVV Venlo in 2021, scoring 26 times.

The 28-year-old took to Instagram to say goodbye to his former club, writing: “Well, difficult times have come! It was an incredible journey! I love and am loved by the incomparable, amazing Celtic fans!

“Thank you so much! You will always be in my heart and mind! I will always be thankful for you! Congratulations. Your GG!”
