The chair of the Democratic National Committee is warning people to take Elon Musk’s new third party seriously.
While DNC Chair Ken Martin said it’s been hard for third parties to have much impact in the past, he thinks Musk’s money and voters’ general dissatisfaction with both Democrats and Republicans may lead them to give the America Party a shot.
“You have the richest man in the world, who’s going to dump a lot of money and resources trying to stand this up,” he explained. “And my sense of it is that there’s definitely frustration in both parties right now with a two-party system, and it could be successful.”
Martin also pointed out how Musk’s party could capitalize on schisms within the Republican coalition.
“It’s laying bare that there are deep divisions within this Republican Party,” he said. “There are the MAGA Trumpers, and then there are the sort of conservative, traditional Republicans, and then there’s the sort of libertarian wing that has also creeped into their party.”
Musk announced his plans to launch the America Party in a Saturday night post on his social media platform X.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he wrote, referring to the projected price tag of Republicans’ so-called Big Beautiful Bill. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
