The Spelling Bee 2023: N’Adom Darko-Asare retains the title in impressive style
In an entertaining but fierce battle between N’Adom Darko-Asare and Mychelle Kumah, the former came out on top to retain the title as Ghana’s best speller in the 2023 edition of The Spelling Bee competition.
Miss Darko-Asare, 11, from DPS International Ghana, spelled her word correctly in the 17th round and easily spelled the winning word correctly to claim the title of The Spelling Bee 2023.
Miss Darko-Asare’s winning word is “DOUROUCOULI.”
12-year-old Mychelle Kumah from Psychiatric Clinic School, Accra was the first runner-up with 12-year-old Janice Afiba Nketsiah from St.
The finals of the competition witnessed a total of 104 participants comprising 46 males and 58 females representing 8 cities in Ghana.
Mother of two Spelling Bee winners, Grace Darko-Asare was honored for her invaluable support to her children and the project.
She is the mother of the 2019 champion, Kwabena Darko-Asare and the 2022 champion, N’Adom Darko-Asare.
At the event were the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah among prominent figures from the United States and other walks of life.

In the speech delivered by the First Lady, she praised the organizers for creating this event for the past sixteen years and encouraged the students to live beyond the Spelling Bee and achieve greater things in life.
For the prize as the winner, N’Adom Darko-Asare won a trip to Washington DC, USA to represent Ghana at the Scripps National Spelling Bee 2023, spending money of $500, an engraved trophy, a DStv Explora decoder installed with a 6-month subscription, Indomie products, a gold medal, and a GH¢300 Goil fuel voucher.
Mychelle Kumah won a trip to Nairobi sponsored by Kenya Airways, $150 spending money, a 3-month installed DStv HD Zapper decoder with a compact display, Indomie products, a silver medal and a GH¢150 Goil fuel voucher.
Janice Afiba Nketsiah also won a trip to Nairobi sponsored by Kenya Airways, $150 spending money, a 3-month pre-installed DStv HD Zapper decoder with a compact display, Indomie products, a bronze medal and a GH¢150 Goil fuel voucher.
The fourth and fifth place spellers will also enjoy a trip to Kenya. Ashesi University also presented a check of GH¢4,500 to the final three contestants.
The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo also offered to sponsor the top three contestants as they travel to the United States with N’Adom Darko-Asare to compete in the Scripps Spelling Bee Championship.
All other spellers were awarded certificates of recognition, Indomie products, customized T-shirts, commemorative medals, customized bags and novels donated by the PAS-US Embassy, while the top three winning schools each received certificates of recognition, GH¢ 1,000 fuel vouchers which sponsored by GOIL.
About The Spelling Bee
Spelling Bee -GH is a literacy program targeted at primary school children in Ghana with students aged 7-13 years. It teaches how to use English effectively.
For the past fourteen years, the Scripps Spelling Bee-franchised program has been running in Ghana. The Spelling Bee has involved more than 30,000 students in 10 regional capitals in the country.
Spelling Bee-Gh operates an inclusive policy where students with special needs are encouraged to participate in the program.
Young Educators Foundation, a Ghanaian NGO holds the Ghanaian franchise.
