CHAN 2022: Senegal beat Algeria on penalties to lift the trophy
Senegal completed the double when they beat hosts Algeria 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw to win the African Nations Championship (CHAN) final on Saturday.
Golden Boot winner Aymen Mahious had the chance to win the competition for footballers playing in his home country when he stepped up to take his 10th spot-kick.
But his effort was weak and went straight to goalkeeper Pape Sy, who made a comfortable save, leaving the teams deadlocked at 4-4, and requiring sudden death extra time in the penalty shootout.
Ousmane Diouf calmly converted for the Senegal side amid whistles from a sellout crowd of 39,120 at the Stade Nelson Mandela in Algiers.
Ahmed Kendouci should have scored to keep Algeria’s hopes of victory alive, but his shot rebounded off the crossbar and Senegal were crowned champions.
The home-based team won a year after a full Senegal team, including stars like Sadio Mane, beat Egypt on penalties to win the main competition, the Africa Cup of Nations.
