Former pop star Gary Glitter was released from prison in England on Friday after serving half of a 16-year sentence for abusing three girls in the 1970s.
The 79-year-old singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was released from prison in Dorset, in the south-west of England. Most offenders in the UK are released halfway through their sentences and then placed on probation.
“Sex offenders like Paul Gadd are closely monitored by the police and the Probation Service and face some of the strictest licensing requirements, including being fitted with a GPS tag,” the Ministry of Justice said in a statement. “If the offender violates this condition at any point, they can go back behind bars.”
The singer was found guilty of one count of attempted rape, four counts of indecency and one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.
Glitter was arrested in October 2012 as part of Operation Yewtree, a national investigation launched into the child abuse scandal surrounding BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile.

Glitter is best known for its hits Rock & Roll (Part 2)was released in 1972, but he collapsed after repeated disruptive behavior.
Glitter was convicted in England in 1999 of possessing child pornography, and served half of a four-month prison sentence. The album of material released two years ago was sold mainly through the website, as UK stores refused to stock the release.
Glitter then lived for several years in Asia, and was convicted of indecency with children in March 2006 in Vietnam. He served almost all of his three-year prison sentence for the incident involving two Vietnamese girls, aged 10 and 11, from the southern coastal city of Vung Tau.
Vietnamese deported to England upon release.
