One of Nigeria’s prominent pharmaceutical businessmen, Umar Abdulazeez, a medical doctor, industrialist, and political figure, died on February 1, 2023 in Lagos, according to family sources.
Mr. Abdulazeez was one of the pioneer doctors who graduated from the University College Hospital Ibadan, together with the minister of education, Jubril Aminu, who later became the vice chancellor of the University of Maiduguri.
Mr. Abdulazeez was born in Okene, Kogi State, in August 1938, attended the famous Government College Keffi, [now Nasarawa State] The University of Ibadan, and the University of Edinburg where he received a postgraduate scholarship in surgery. He lectured briefly at Ahmadu Bello University before moving to the private sector which led him to set up Biomedical Services in Ilorin, the first manufacturer of intravenous pharmaceutical fluids in the country in the early eighties. Under his leadership, Biomedical Limited became one of the largest healthcare providers and the largest employer in the country, providing employment to thousands of Nigerians.

After returning to politics in 1993, Mr. Abdulazeez collaborated with the late General Shehu Yar Adua to found the defunct People’s Front, the precursor of the Social Democratic Party. [SDP]. He is the Chairman of the People’s Front.
He is also a respected public figure and Tafidan Tanah Ebira. He is survived by three wives, 19 children and many grandchildren.
