MANILA, Philippines-Neil Etheridge on Wednesday condemned the reported incident of racial abuse during Birmingham City’s recent match against Blackburn Rovers in the Football Association (FA) Cup.
The Philippine Azkals goalkeeper took to social media after losing 1-0 in the replay of the fourth round tie held at the Blues’ St. Andrew.
“I understand that one individual does not speak for all the fans or all the people in the community,” said Etheridge, a day after the incident which happened at the weekend at Blackburn’s Ewood Park.
“I’m proud of what I’ve done, once again, it’s an ongoing problem that we all have to take responsibility for. Racism and all forms of discrimination must not be tolerated. We can’t eradicate it overnight, but if we all can continue to work on the education that exists in outside, I hope my son and my children can grow up in a better world,” he said.
Etheridge received support not only from his club but also from the Philippine Football Federation, which condemned the incident.
Blackburn said it was also investigating the matter while local police, according to news reports in the UK, were looking for witnesses.
Birmingham and Blackburn settled for a 2-2 draw, forcing a replay to decide which team will progress to the fifth round of the prestigious cup competition.
But hopes for Etheridge and the Blues were dashed after an own goal conceded by team-mate Auston Trusty in added time.
“Very disappointed with the result of yesterday’s game. Gutted out of the FA Cup!” said Etheridge.
