An investigation by the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) into a suspected foodborne illness outbreak in Oyibi in Adenta Municipality in Accra revealed that 53 people developed symptoms of foodborne illness after eating waakye or rice and tomato rice from a food vendor.
The investigation, which was conducted in conjunction with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), also revealed that one person was reported dead, but the cause of death has not been confirmed.
A statement issued by the Authority in Accra on Friday said the environmental assessment of food preparation sites of three vending sites in Bush Canteen, Prison Joint and Sharp Curve Joint revealed that there was poor food handling practices, which could have resulted in food contamination. causing foodborne disease outbreaks.
The statement said the FDA has suspended the operation of Yellow Side until steps are taken to ensure that these activities are carried out to prevent future incidents.
The FDA launched the Street Food Vending Scheme in November 2021, together with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Councils.
The scheme, developed under FAO’s Healthy Street Food Incentive Project, aims to issue vendors who comply with Street Food Vending Permits.
The statement urged consumers to seek permission from their favorite restaurants before serving.
“We strongly urge street food vendors to apply for a permit,” he said.
