ANTIPOLO—Despite losing to NLEX in the PBA Governor’s Cup on Saturday, Northport team manager Pido Jarencio kept a smile on his face.

The reason for his smile, however, remains a secret as he played coy when asked about his possible return to UST as head coach in the UAAP.

“Let’s wait for the announcement,” Jarencio said in Filipino after the Batang Pier lost 121-112 to the Road Warriors at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

On Friday night, multiple reports said that Jarencio will return to UST after stepping down as Northport’s head coach.

Season 98 NCAA championship coach Bonnie Tan succeeded him as the 58-year-old moved to the position of team manager.

Without denying or confirming the rumors, Jarencio said that he was able to talk to the UST officials by chance.

“You, somehow, I have to talk to him. Let’s talk,” he said. “Now just talk.”

When asked who he had discussed with, Jarencio mentioned “Father” who runs UST.

UST’s athletic director is Fr. Rodel Cansancio, OP

During his eight years as coach of the Growling Tigers, Jarencio led UST to the UAAP title in 2006 while only missing the Final Four twice in 2008 and 2010.

When asked about his desire to coach again for his previous 1-13 team in Season 85, he had only one thing to say: “It depends.”
