Sale’s Arron Reed scored a last minute try
Arron Reed scored a last-minute try as Sale secured a dramatic 30-27 Gallagher Premiership victory over a strong Bath side that saw three players receive yellow cards at the AJ Bell Stadium.
Visiting captain Ben Spencer’s 17 points had Bath on the cusp as they battled back from 22-3 down to lead 27-25 before Reed dived over in the corner.
First-half tries from Joe Carpenter, Sam Dugdale, Tom Roebuck and Tommy Taylor had the hosts in control, although Niall Annett’s half-time effort gave the visitors hope.
Jonathan Joseph’s try continued the fightback and – despite yellow cards for both Max Ojomoh and Cameron Redpath – Spencer’s conversion from his own try saw the visitors take the lead, only for Reed’s late score to grab the full five points.
A wet night at the AJ Bell Stadium got off to a horrendous start with Will Butt sent to the sin bin for a dangerous play as full-back Carpenter tried to claim the high ball with barely a minute on the clock.
With the man advantage, Sale soon took the lead. Scrum-half Gus Warr kicked a grubber kick behind the visitors’ defense with Carpenter winning the ball and diving.
Spencer’s penalty from the front post made it 5-3 after five minutes, but the Sharks forward made full use of a powerful driving maul to score three more tries and secure the bonus point after just 32 minutes.
Flanker Dugdale met little resistance from the Bath defense when he went through after 17 minutes, Robert Du Preez marked his 100th appearance for the hosts with a successful conversion.
Another five-metre lineout, 10 minutes later, was stopped only for Jean-Luc Du Preez to point blank blind side where Roebuck had run clear to the tryline for the Sharks’ third try.
The bonus point try came before the break from a second successful maul drive, this time Taylor who burrowed his way through to give Sale a 22-3 lead.
Annett reduced the deficit with the final play of the half as the Bath Pack exacted some revenge with their own successful maul driving.
The visitors were back on the score as Spencer’s grubber kick was collected by Joseph, who had the pace for a clear race.
Center Ojomoh was Bath’s second player in the bin before Du Preez hit a penalty to make it 25-17 on the half-hour.
Redpath joined Ojomoh in the bin when he beat Tom O’Flaherty without the ball but another Spencer penalty as well as a converted try for scrum-half saw the visitors lead 27-25.
Du Preez missed two long-range penalties in the dying minutes as tensions mounted, but the Sharks held their nerve to send Reed into the corner with the last game.
