The NDC should review the law on the election of the parliamentary leader – Sam George
Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam Nartey George called for a review of the constitution of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to have a codified process that will guide the election of leaders in Parliament.
He added that, the current agitations are below reshuffle of the Minority Leadership in Parliament could have been avoided if there was clearly laid down convention.
Talk to Citi News, Sam George stated that the NDC constitution does not specify a clear process for the election of minority leaders.
“If everyone is heard, and there is a consensus position, then we agree with the caucus and the national executive, but we need to change the process for electing minorities in parliament. Yes, I agree with whoever said that in our constitution there is nothing that says that members parliament must be consulted.
“But nowhere does it state that the national executive will elect our leaders in Parliament. The constitution is silent on the election of leaders. It is a convention that has been used. If the convention is a problem, then I think this is the moment for us as a party to use this opportunity to codify the process ,” said Sam George.
The NDC earlier this week reshuffled its leadership in Parliament replacing Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu with Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle also replaces Ketu North MP, James Klutse Avedzi as Deputy Minority Leader while Kwame Governs Agbodza replaces Asawase MP, Muntaka Mubarak as Minority Chief Whip.
Several NDC MPs including MP for Bolgatanga East, Dominic Ayine and MP for Tamale Central, Murtala Muhammed later described the change of leadership as undemocratic and very worrying, after they claimed they were not consulted before the change.
Several MPs signed a petition to reject the party’s decision. Other MPs have also called on party leaders to ignore calls for the reshuffling to be reversed.
